How to Create a Cutout Sub-Design in HFSS 3D Layout

Hello everyone, this is Adel from Ozen Engineering, Inc. In this video, I'll show you how to extract a portion of a PCB in HFSS 3D layout using the cutout sub-design feature.

Steps to Extract a Portion of a PCB

  1. Consider the PCB available in the HFSS 3D layout examples.
  2. Navigate to the Layout tab.
  3. Set the active layer to Outline:
    • You can do this by selecting the radio button next to the layer outline in the Layers window.
  4. Draw a shape around the area you want to extract. This defines the cutout region. For instance, draw a polygon.
  5. Click on Cutout.

Cutout Sub-Design Window

In the Cutout sub-design window, you can control the cutout properties:

  • Use the current design or create a new one by selecting Create New.
  • Create the cutout as a sub-design within the parent design by selecting the appropriate option.
  • Clicking Clip at Extents will clip the net against this cutout.
  • If you want to keep just the excluded region, select the corresponding option.

Click OK to complete the cutout. As you can see, a new design appears in the project manager, consisting of the part of the PCB that you wanted to extract.

Trying a Different Shape

Let's go back to the original design and try a different shape. This time, I'll draw a rectangle. As you can see, we have our sub-design as expected.

This is how to extract a portion of a PCB in HFSS 3D layout using the cutout sub-design feature. Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.

Hello everyone, this is Adel from OZO Engineering and in this video I'll show you how to extract a portion of a PCB in HFSS 3D layout using the cutout sub-design feature. So let's consider this PCB which you can find in the HFSS 3D layout examples.

Now to extract a portion of this PCB, let's go to the Layout tab, set the active layer to Outline. You can also do that by selecting the radio button next to the layer outline in the Layers window. Now we need to draw a shape around the area we want to extract. This defines the cutout region.

Let's for instance draw a polygon. Click on Cutout. Here in the Cutout sub-design window we control the cutout properties. We can use the current design or create a new one by selecting Create New. We can also create the cutout as a sub-design within the parent design if we select this.

Here clicking Clip at Extents will clip the net against this cutout. And if we want to keep just the excluded region we can select this here. Now let's click OK to complete the cutout.

As you can see we have a new design in the project manager which consists of the part of the PCB that we wanted to extract. Let's go back to the original design and try a different shape. This time I'll draw a rectangle. And as you can see we have our sub-design as expected.
