Ansys EMC Plus: S-Parameters Calculation and Export in Touchstone Format

Hello everyone, this is Adel from Ozen Engineering, Inc. In this video, I'll demonstrate the workflow for calculating the S-parameter matrix of a coaxial cable and exporting it in Touchstone format. This exercise is available in software examples. Let's consider the provided CAD model and start by defining the simulation domain.

Defining the Simulation Domain

  1. Click on the Domain button.
  2. Expand the following parameters:
    • Time
    • Lattice
    • Minimum
    • Maximum
    • Step Size
  3. Set the frequency range:
    • Lowest Frequency: 50 kHz
    • Highest Frequency: 1 GHz
  4. Set the stability margin to 15%.
  5. For a minimum of 50 GHz, set the highest frequency to 50 GHz.
  6. Define the domain dimensions:
    • Minimum X: -60 mm
    • Minimum Y: -150 mm
    • Minimum Z: -120 mm
    • Maximum X: 600 mm
    • Maximum Y: 150 mm
    • Maximum Z: 150 mm
  7. Keep the step size at 30 mm.
  8. Click Complete.

Assigning Material Properties

  1. Click on the Materials button.
  2. Select Perfect Conductor.
  3. Select all surfaces and click Complete to assign the material.
  4. Hide the domain by clicking on the eye icon.

Creating the Cable

  1. Go to the mHarness tab and click on Cabling.
  2. Select Shield and then Line.
  3. Add terminations.
  4. Click on Library and expand:
    • General
    • Singles
  5. Use a 22-gauge single and click OK.
  6. Under terminations, change the resistance to 1E-6 and add a new terminal for both terminations.
  7. Click Complete.
  8. Click on Shield, add Conductor, select the line, and add terminations.
  9. In the Library tab, expand:
    • General
    • Bare Wire
  10. Select the 22-gauge wire and click OK.
  11. Under terminations, change the resistance to 50 ohms for both terminations and click Complete.

Visualizing the Cable Cross Section

  1. Click on Inspect Cross Section.
  2. Hover over the line to view the cross section of the cable.

Adding Ports to the Model

  1. Click on Port and select the line.
  2. Select the terminal, choose Layer 2, and select the conductor. Click OK.
  3. Repeat the steps to assign a port to the other terminal.
  4. In the simulation tree, you can see and rename the ports if desired.

Meshing and Running the Simulation

  1. Click on the Mesh button.
  2. Run the simulation by clicking on Start New S-Parameter Analysis and then Run.

Viewing and Exporting Results

  1. Right-click on the first port and select Compute Magnitude dB.
  2. Right-click again and select Plot to view the S-parameters.
  3. EMCplus outputs the S-parameters in Touchstone format, available in the project directory as a .ts file.
  4. This file can be used in any RF circuit simulator. For instance, I imported it into Circuit and generated the S-parameter plot.

In this video, we covered the workflow for calculating the S-parameter matrix of a coaxial cable and exporting it in Touchstone format. Thanks for watching, and see you in the next video.

Hello everyone, this is Adel from OZ Engineering. In this video, I'll show you the workflow for calculating the S-parameter matrix of a coaxial cable and for exporting it in Touchstone format.

The exercise is available in software examples, so let's consider the provided CAD model and start by defining the simulation domain. I'll start by clicking on the domain button, then expand time, lattice, minimum, maximum, and step size.

I set the lowest frequency to 50 kilohertz and the highest frequency to 1 gigahertz. I'll keep the stability margin to 15 percent and set the minimum and maximum values for X, Y, and Z, and keep the step size at 30 mm. Then, click complete. Next, assign material properties to the model.

The reference structure will be modeled as a perfect electric conductor. Click on the materials button, select perfect conductor, and assign it to the surfaces. Now, create the cable. EMCplus allows modeling cables by assigning a cross section to the wire that represents the cable path.

Go to the mHarness tab, click on cabling, select shield, line, and add terminations. Then, select a 22 gauge single wire from the library, and under terminations, change the resistance to 1E- 6. Add a new terminal and repeat for both terminations.

To add a conductor to the shield, click on shield, add, conductor, select line, add terminations, select the 22 gauge wire from the library, and under terminations, change the resistance to 50 ohm. Repeat for both terminations, then click complete.

To visualize the cross section of the cable, click on inspect cross section and hover over the line. Next, add ports to the model. Click on port, select the line, click on the terminal, select layer 2, and select the conductor. Repeat for the other components.

In the simulation tree, you can see the ports and rename them if needed. Now, mesh the model and run the simulation by clicking on start new S-parameter analysis and run. View the results by right-clicking on the first port and clicking compute magnitude dB.

The S-parameters are output in Touchstone format, available in the project directory as a .ts file. In this video, we saw the workflow for calculating the S-parameter matrix of a coaxial cable and for exploring it in Touchstone format. Thanks for watching, and see you in the next video.
