Welcome to the Donato Tutorial Series

Part: Robustness Analysis with Optuslang Inside ANSYS Workbench

This tutorial is based on Tutorial 2: Optimization Analysis. Deterministic optimization does not consider uncertainties, which might lead to high imperfection sensitivities or over-optimized designs. Therefore, the robustness of an optimized design needs to be validated.

Steps to Perform Robustness Analysis

  1. Remember the optimized design, which will now be used as the mean for the robustness analysis.
  2. Via the ANSYS Workbench:
    • Select the best design from the design table.
    • Choose Copy Inputs to Current via the Context menu.
    • Return to the Project.
  3. Drag a new robustness system to the Project schematic.
  4. Open the Parameters dialog:
    • The current design from the ANSYS Workbench design table is now the reference design.
    • Since the parameters are of mixed type in the robustness system, the mean value is the reference value.
    • Leave the dialog by hitting OK.
  5. Open the Sampling settings:
    • Select 100 samples.
    • Update the sampling block.
    • Wait until the algorithm converges.
  6. Review the results:
    • Open the Post Processing by double-clicking.
    • For example, view the histogram of response WB_Y.
    • The standard deviation and mean can be seen in the table below.

Welcome to the Donato tutorial series. In this part, we present a robustness analysis with OptiSLang inside ANSYS Workbench. This tutorial is based on Tutorial 2, Optimization Analysis. Deterministic optimization does not consider uncertainties.

This might lead to high imperfection sensitivities or over-optimized designs. Thus, the robustness of an optimized design needs to be validated. Remember the optimized design. This will now be used as the mean of the robustness analysis.

Via the ANSYS Workbench, select the best design from the design table. Choose "Copy Inputs to Current" via the Context menu. Return to Project. Drag a new "Robustness System" to the Project schematic. Open the Parameters dialog.

The current design from the ANSYS Workbench design table is now the reference design. Since the parameters are of mixed type in the robustness system, the mean value is the reference value. Leave the dialog by hitting OK. Open the Sampling settings. Select 100 samples. Update the sampling block.

Wait until the algorithm converges. Now take a look at the results. Open the Post-Processing by double-clicking. For example, the histogram of response WB\_Y is shown. The standard deviation and mean can be seen in the table below. Thanks for watching this video.
