Message from the President
We started October with a small amount of precipitation here in Silicon Valley. It is a most welcome moment during this historical drought we are in. We are hoping that this is the beginning of a rainy fall and winter. We need to make up for one year of rain! So, it is exciting to see raindrops early in October.
This month, we are also excited about ANSYS Low and High Frequency
Electromagnetics software products. We are getting very positive feedback from our clients as well as our in-house use of these simulation products proved them to be the industry leading simulation products. It is not only the one physics we can solve for but also coupling different physics and simulating the full product performance. A good example is a wearable device; these devices have high frequency antennas wrapped in an almost circular shape which changes the performance of the antenna from its original shape. Using ANSYS simulation software tools, designers and maufacturers of these wearables devices can simulate the performance of the antennas as well as addressing mechanical reliability and any comfort/heat transfer aspects. You are going to find more detailed information on this in this newsletter in addition to a lunch and learn event we will have later in October. We will also have a lunch and learn event on Icepak late in the month. So, welcome to October and please let me know if/how I can be of help with your simulation software needs.

ANSYS and Cray Smash Supercomputing Records!
We are pleased to announce that ANSYS and Cray Inc. have smashed the previous simulations record by scaling ANSYS Fluent to 129,000 compute cores!
The previous record about a year ago when ANSYS announced that Fluent has scaled to 36,000 cores with the help of NCSA. The dramatic 4x performance improvement over the previous record is not only significant but also opens up possibilities for complete virtual prototype and build! The complex multiphysics simulation on an industrial combustor was run on Cray XC30 supercomputer at 90% efficiency.
Though majority of our customers will not run more than 1000 cores, this technological breakthrough demonstrates that the capabilities are readily available at the fingertips for virtual prototyping.
The flexible ANSYS HPC licensing options allow scalability to desirable computational level a simulation requires, from individual HPC bundles to small workgroups up to virtually unlimited parallel capability.
ANSYS HPC can dramatically improve productivity of the engineers, reduce costs and improve product’s time-to-market.

ANSYS HFSS for Antenna Arrays
ANSYS HFSS offers very advanced features for antenna designs. For large finite arrays, you can do explicit analysis and analyze the entire finite array model in HFSS. Although major challenges in explicit are large number of elements (unit cells), large number of excitations, and complicated meshing process. The other solution is finite array Domain Decomposition (DDM). It utilizes replicated DDM unit cell to address array concerns and obtains accurate results that match HFSS explicit simulations. Also, DDM distributes RAM and reduces solve time. Try it and take advantage of Finite Array DDM Tool!
