FRACTURED MECHANICS is the study of flaws and cracks in materials.  It is an important engineering application because the presence of cracks can significantly decrease the structural strength and reliability of parts.  The traditional Strength of Material approach does not anticipate the presence of a crack or does so via concentration factors.
